Yesterday we had some some very sad about our new little Westie girl Sara.
We had concerns about her walking difficulties and the lump in her groin, her ears and her whole general shape plus she wees very frequently. We had a call to take her from a farmer who had noticed her limping and found she had a lump.
The vet was surprised at her shape and condition and she was kept in for xrays, to be spayed and general investigation.
When we collected her the news was not good. Sara had a hernia which may having been putting some pressure on her bladder which has been repaired. Her hips are awful. One is bad and the other is a real mess. The vet thinks she made have had Perthies as a puppy which wasn't treated. Her knees are not good either. She has two cauliflower ears so this is why her little ears are curled over and thickened.
She has a bit of a crackle in her lungs as well but the good news was that her heart is good. Her skin has a few sore patches which will soon improve.
She has huge front shoulders and this may well be where she has put all her body weight forward to relieve the pain in her hips. She has had a Cesarean at some time in her life.
It is just heartbreaking to think of what this girl has gone through, especially so when having puppies. She now been spayed.
I think it unlikely that we will ever be able to home Sara. The vet will assess her again in 10 days when she has all her stitches out. She needs gentle exercise to try and improve the muscle on her back legs which are also longer than her front legs which makes her hips stick up and it is essential that she does not gain any weight. She has gone on to Metacam which will help with the pain and make her more inclined to move around get some some exercise
Pauline and Phil answered a call from us late last night and have taken her in for us as their home is quiet re than mine at the moment and they will be able to keep a check on her progress.
Jan has taken some pics and I know Pauline will and keep us updated. Lots of good thoughts and prayers (for those that do) for this messed up little dog.
