Derek update.
Tracey from Animals In Need in Northampton is arranging for an orthopedic contact she has to have a look at Derek's xrays for us. In the meantime he needs a short term foster home for next week or a longer term foster home whilst we decide the next course of action.

Derek had a bit of a holiday last week whilst I was in Jersey. In case anyone has missed it here is a post and photos put on by Racheal who had him as a house guest while I was away. IMG]http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e48/rachael_luvs_animails/HPIM2306.jpg[/IMG] He is very sweet- but he is like a ninja! Hell fall asleep on you and you try and sneak away to get a drink and by the time your theyre hes sitting behind you and you dont hear him even on tiles ! Very affectionate . He did jump at bit and at first i squealed as he is big but he really dosnt like loud noises and would wonder off looking sad. He loves toys as well-poppy makes a small pile in the garden where as derek litters the garden...and managed to get my slippers out there with out me noticing but didnt chew them. He responds better to calm voices-the first night in the crate and i had to keep talking to him in a calm voice until he nodded off. Been trying to do "sit" but hes become very clever-when ever there is food he sits thinking hell get some people food. it nice to have a dog who isnt fussy with his food (poppy is!) he just eats his wet and dry . Ive had one accident -but i missed him going out. Apart from that he is very good with the toilet. He has also become accustom to jumping on the bed after his morning toilet and lay his head on my arm and put his body really close so he can nap again. He is a brilliant puppy who is so sweet natured and cuddly.

I do hope this beautiful boy can be given a fantastic life , I have a soft spot for the wonky ones maybe because I think of myself as wonky. But he is just so adorable and will be following his progress with great interest. Please give him a squidge from me

The specialist is back from holiday but has had a very serious familly illness to deal with so hasn't been able to look at the xrays as yet.
We hope to have some news towards the end of the week.

We have had the worst possible news. Derek's xrays have been seen by an orthopedic specialist and an orthopedic surgeon from the Royal Vet School and there is nothing that can be done for him. Surgery is not an option and in addition some of the nerves that should be contained within the spine on on the outside.
They felt that Derek must be in constant pain. Derek does not seem to show this and perhaps because he has never known any different he has a coping mechanism. The only time I notice a difference is in the evening when he is tired. He is on daily Metacam though so this I suppose must help him.
I am taking him back to our own vet on Monday to discuss the results. After Max yesterday this is such a blow.
