Derek is pretty wonky. One of a pair of puppies born from an accidental mating between brother and sister Dalmatians, Derek has a few issues.
He has a very short curly tail and no neck to speak of. He is only 4 1/2 months old and will be seeing our vet on Monday. This liver and white pup is a very happy chap and hopefully his birth defects will not affect his quality of life.
Pics tomorrow.

This dog is one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Although he does not seem to be in pain he does seem awkward and uncomfortable at times. His poor body is so distorted I could cry.
How could people allow this to happen. They could have got the bitch to a vet and had a misalliance injection or had her spayed before the pups got to half way. This dog should never have been born and I understand his sister is also deformed.
Now he is we will do our very best for him although I doubt there is anything surgical that can be done. It makes me sad to watch him and that should not be what you feel when you watcha pup.

Oh Eileen, I haven't even seen him and I'm welling up . such a shame and a waste, and they are the nicest words I can find. Poor little thing, and his sister. It seems to be never ending doesn't it?

He reminds me of one of those Transformer machines that the kids have where there is a body and a head that seems to just come out of it. He has huge paws so is going to be a big boy as well.
He came to us via a fab vet nurse who has contacted us about a number of animals needing help including Punt and Jenny.

Derek has seen the vet today. She thinks his main problem will be his neck. He has either fused vertebrae, miss shaped ones or missing ones. This could be a possible type of spina bifida. The type of problem he has with his corkscrew tail is more often seen in English Bulldogs, Bostons and a couple of other breeds.
He will have xrays taken on Friday when he will be castrated. If surgery is needed our vets would not be able to do it and Derek would need to see a spine specialist. In the meantime he is having a daily dose of Metacam to ease any discomfort he may have.

Oh Derek, you have found the right place to be, sweetie. Wonkiness is simply not a problem for all the kind souls who are now looking after you at FOA RCT. Fingers crossed that all will be well for you and your sister. No doubt there will be a special fund set up for you before too long?

Well this lovely lad came to visit me last night and made himslef right at home. He is a happy chap and eagerly greeted my OH and my sone with affectionate kisses and lots of paw swinging. He is very awkward looking and seems more comfortable with his nose to the floor as he finds it impossible to lift his head upwards. He loves his tummy tickled but its obvious he finds it difficult to lay on his back as his head won't touch the floor in that position. He seems more comfortable on his side but even then, cannot stretch his head out flat. It is very saddening to watch him try to play and jump just like a normal 4 1/2 month old pupster, but he is very unco-ordinated, bless him. I managed to get some pictures although it was difficult as he wouldn't keep still very long. Meet Derek the brave.... his tail is definitely causing him a problem to sit straight and he prefers to side sideways.. His eyes are the palest green and he is so very handsome ....... its just not fair
