Yesterday we were asked to help with two dogs that were left in a house where the owner had died. A local solicitor lives next door to the owner's sister, who is house bound and so never goes out. The solicitor came into the shop and explained that she had tried everywhere to get help for the dogs - RSPCA told her to take them and have them pts. Dogstrust were full. Animal Lifeline couldn't help and our local animal shelter were also full. The lady was found dead at her home after about 30 hours, and there was an oldie terrier and a younger Spaniel X in a dreadful state. The lovely solicitor, Debbie has been going in 3 times a day to feed and water them but she already has 3 dogs of her own and it upset her to leave them there alone. Today we met her there and after a while managed to get the dogs to safety (with Eileen!) The house was in a dreadful state and it is apprent that the lady cared very much for her animals but must have been very ill herself, for some time, poor lady. This is the oldie called Benjy. He has an horrendous ear infection and something going on with his water works. He is the more confident of the two. and after his 'quick' bath as he was getting quite stressed. This is Shadow who is so very traumatised and was hiding behind the sofa, bless him. His eye is really very sore and ulcerated but it seems its been an on-going thing. Both are off to the vet in the morning and we will keep you updated. Lets hope these two get a good prognosis. They are truly lovely dogs.

Benjy is still at the vets after surgery yesterday. He had a number of stones removed, one of which was the size of a pebble. He must have been in extreme pain for some time with this. His ear has been cleaned and swabs taken. The canal is very thickened and was full of blood and pus but with medication is should start to feel much better. he has had a dental and a 1st vac.
Shadow was seen by the vet yesterday and is on various medication for a very nasty eye condition. Again this seems long standing so we will have to wait and see how it responds to treatment.
He is the more timed of the two but is starting to come for a scratch and has taken over the leather armchair. He is a sweet, very gentle dog despite the trauma of all that has happened to him. Yesterday he stood in the corner of the kitchen, hiding his face but is now starting to wag his tail.
Their owner who was only in her 50's must have been very ill for some time to have allowed things to become as they were, both with the dogs and her home. I cannot stop thinking about her and wondering if she failed to get medical help for herself because of her worry about what might happen to the dogs if it was discovered the conditions they were living in. The stress must have been unbearable and I am so sad that she felt she had no where to turn for help. Where she would not be judged and criticized for allowing things to get out of control.
The results have not yet been released of the post mortem so too early to say what happened but I would very much like to go to her funeral if that is possible.

Eileen, your kindness and concern, for people as well as their dogs, never fails to amaze me. You are indeed very very special I'm so glad you have taken these two poor souls on board. Do you think Shadow has a bit of Cavalier somewhere? There is something about his face that makes me hope so Have PM'd you about these two as well.
