I had a jrtx called murphy who had dementia and cataracts and he was nearly deaf, but he still enjoyed life in his own little world. He had it for about 2 years then he lost control of his bowels really badly so we had to make the decision then but he was 15 he was never nasty to us just looked at us sometimes as if to say who on earth are you then he'd plod off again. Good luck Wilf, I hope your ex owners get to feel how scared and confused you have been.

Well, our Wilf is up and down when the weather is bright and sunny, he's bright and sunny, but the last few days have been a bit gloomy and so has Wilf, today it is brighter, so again Wilf is more interested in what's going on around him. He's always interested in his food though and he makes sure he gets some fussing from Phil, of an evening.

Jan and I were at Pauline and Phil's a couple of days ago and Wilfred looked great. He was wandering around with the others and wonderful to see.
Ha may not have a huge aamount of time left but he is so much happier it is a joy to see.

I thought there was something not quite right about Wilfred when we got home Friday after taking Cricket to her new home, but couldn't put my finger on what it was.
He was OK after that, had his tea and was bright and alert when Eileen & Jan came up.
We went t bed about 12 and then I was up and down to him 'til gone 3am, he was just standing there barking at the wall and radiator by his bed in the kitchen. he always settled at night fine before that.
Finally I got him settled after some t touch massage and he laid down and went to sleep.
Well ever since that day/night all he does is sleep, has a little while wandering up and down the kitchen before his meal times then back to sleep again, because he's lying down sleeping so much his poor legs are getting stiffer and wobblier.
I'm certain now that he has had a bit of a stroke or some kind of episode in the brain that day, as it is very similar to what we had with Sammie after her stroke.
I feel awful because I wasn't here with him if he did have something happen, but I feel even worse now to be thinking maybe it's time to let him go.
We've only had him here a short while, does he even know we love him already ?

Oh Pauline, I'm so sorry to hear about Wilfred, he's my favourite man. I’ve never had any experience of strokes in dogs, but my old Jack was senile for the last 12-18 months of his life and I was wondering if Wilfred’s symptoms could be linked to his senility. My Jack used to stand and bark at the wall incessantly...most of the night at times, then it'd be the other extreme when he'd sleep for hours and hours on end if I allowed him to. These are both very common symptoms of senility and can be very distressing to witness. Jack was my ex’s dog and had been in my home since he was a pup so I knew him very well, and I suppose this made it a little easier for me to gauge his quality of life. I knew the little monster inside out, or should I say I knew the dog he had been for 15 + yrs, but during that last year there were the bad days when I would wonder if he even knew I was there, so I can well imagine how difficult it is for you. You and Phil are doing a wonderful job, thank you for loving Wilfred.

Yes his problems are linked to the senility, but when they have a stroke or something similar in the brain it shuts down parts of the brain and then the senility gets worse.
We experienced this with Sammie (another FOTA foster) and her situation deteriorated quite quickly.

Wilf had a really good day today, He spent a lot more time awake, We had an hour just the 2 of us while I gave him a lovely brush through, he even started snuggling into my hand towards the end. We then went for a little stroll with Sara I'm keeping my fingers crossed now that he stays bright and alert

Wilf had another really good day today, He spent quite a while down the garden, pottering in and out of the shed with Phil. Then I gave him a quiet massage and brush. I then decided to give him a bath, after we were done, I carried him down to the kitchen and stood him on the floor for a rub down with the towel, He was gone like a rocket, straight out the garden and down the shed to Phil, He cleared the 3 steps from the patio to the garden in 1 ( at this point my heart stopped, I was certain he would land on his head) and then he ran like the wind into the shed. Normally I have to lift him down the steps and back up again. Well in future when he's off with the fairies too long, I'll just give him a bath, cos that sure wakes him up
