We had Emma come to us on foster in December 2005 at around aged 11 ;D We had never heard of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever yet alone seen one ;D The first night with us, she just stood in the corner facing the wall - we just couldn't budge her - she was a stubborn old girl ;D She was beautiful, yet smelly, she was stubborn, yet funny. She definitely called the shots ;D Obviously we failed in no time For the 2 years we had her, Mr OLG slept on the sofa because if we went to bed we were kept awake by the constant pitter bloody patter on the wooden floor . She was welcome upstairs, but she didn't want to. I'd only ever seen her go upstairs about half a dozen times. She walked up like and old woman and would come down like a puppy - legs everywhere and no control She never went on the sofa either, even if she was invited She only ever went on the sofa once! and it was then we knew she was staying ;D Gawd, I smile when I think of her antics ;D Being a Chesapeake, she was a fantastic swimmer. There was barely a ripple in the water - she just glided. No matter what the weather if there was a pond/river, she had to be in there. she was never happy with us if we told her it was time to go I shed a tear now because I am writing about her and remembering this day 4 years ago when we sent her to the bridge, BUT all my memories are good ones and they overtake any sadness I feel. She came to us to see out her days and we had 2 wonderful years with her ;D A few pics of an oldie Chesapeake Bay Retriever for those of you that have never seen one or for those of you that love them ;D The day she arrived - so sad A few weeks later ;D Barely a ripple compared to Stitch lol With her dad on the sofa - the only time she ever climbed up Beautiful girl

Awwwww lovely photo's Denese, never seen a Chesapeake Retriever before[or heard of them]she looked to have a really dense coat i 'm guessing this helps a great deal for a water loving dog. I bet she had the best time with you,its such a sad time when you have top say goodbye but as proven no one can take away all the good memories from you .xx Elaine

Thank you both ;D Thankfully they don't come into rescue that often - Emma came from the Oldies Club and travelled all the way from Suffolk to be with us ;D Chesapeakes have a strange coat Diggle - sort of soft, yet sort of wirey but definitely smelly Emma was old so her coat probably wasn't in the best condition as it would have been when she was younger, but you can see from the last photo how curly and thick it is around the neck and I should imagine that at one point in her life she was like that all over ;D I'm sure I have a lock of her hair somewhere ;D She was very waterproof The only other Chesapeake I ever met, was one that Fionna at Lizzie's barn had - a young boy iirc. I think there is one member on DP that has one or two ;D Although very lab looking, Chesapeakes are actually bred from Newfoundlands ;D

Aww Emma looks lovely. Sleep Tight Beautiful Girl
I have seen the Chesapeakes, they are lovely.
We had Tazz a Curly Coated Retriever, he had Afro Curly fur and that had a smell about it too. I think it may be the oils in their skin to keep their fur waterproof!!! Tazz swam like a fish too, with hardly a ripple .
Thanks for sharing those lovely photos xx
