Sometimes we get a bit of flack for taking in some of the animals we do. There are people who think it is wrong to spend a lot of money on one dog or cat. That it is somehow immoral in times of austerity.
Twice a year we contact companies asking for donations of items for our fundraising auctions and on occasions there can be replies that are quite critical of our need to spend hundreds and sometimes thousands on one dog or cat. We don't think like that. Our Wonky Dog Club is all about going that extra mile and helping an animal where we may be their last chance. We also on occasions are criticized because we never believe that any animal is too old to have our help. As long as there is quality of life we will do whatever it takes to make sure they get the help they need whatever their age.
Two such animals were Molly the Westie eleven years plus and her older friend Jezz the Persian cat. We heard about their plight and were made aware that their elderly owner, who had died, had not provided them with the best care in her later years. Molly had so many problems including dermodectic mange, dry eye, pus filled ears, cracked and bleeding skin and worst of all mammary tumours. Our vet posed the question of euthanasia but we agreed that she was a happy little dog and we would do our very best for her. Jezz was unable to get out of her cat carrier unassisted because of the huge mound of matted hair all over her body. She spent three days in our vets and had all the hair shaved off. The vet found Jezz also had mammary tumours and a scan showed that she had cancer of the liver. We decided that she would have whatever care she needed for however long she had left and as long as she was happy. They have both done so well. Jezz is in a foster home with one of our volunteers and on daily meds, the tumour is getting larger but very slowly and Jezz is pain free and enjoying life.
Molly also did well and has loved all the fuss and attention. In the last couple of days Molly has been a little depressed and then yesterday went off her food. A visit to the vet today found that the tumour had grown and that she also had a mass in her liver so we decided the time had come for her to make her last journey. She left us as all animals should leave, in the arms of someone who loved her and cried for her. It has been a privilege to know this wonderful dog, we would have loved to
have met her in her heyday, she must have been such a character. Safe and mended now at the bridge don't ever let anyone tell you that a dog is too old, too sick or too expensive to treat. Scroll through the animals, past and present, in our Wonky Dog Club, they are priceless.
