My beloved mini schnauzer Winnie, who came to me via FOA RCT on 2009 (known as Whitney at that time) is booked in for cataract surgery next Monday. Winnie has been virtually blind since she came to live with us. She has managed very well, and is blessed with the most gentle and affectionate nature (although she still dislikes my husband, indeed nearly everyone except me - maybe the puppy farm beginnings). She makes fumbling efforts to play, and keep up with the other dogs, and makes the best of things. But it would be so fantastic for her to be able to see, maybe for the first time since her early years, and to be able to play and run about safely. Fingers crossed for a happy outcome!

Good luck Winnie, we'll be thinking of you on Monday. It will be wonderful if she can see a little better.

Update on Winnie's cataract operation. There were some complications but so far so good - Winnie is recovering well, and can see for the first time since she's been with us. There is a way to go yet, but it's very exciting!

Another update - Winnie continues to make excellent progress. Her sight is pretty good - today she navigated around a complex system of muddy puddles without getting her little paws wet! Before she'd just go crashing through them. An added bonus is her increased confidence levels. She had been really difficult to housetrain, and seemed completely unable to 'hold it in', so we were forever coming down to puddles and piles of poo, despite a regular schedule. Just in the last few weeks, she's become completely housetrained. I can't really figure it out, but maybe she's just less anxious in general. Another bonus for me is that she has now realised that the sofa is in fact one big dog bed, and so confidently jumps up and snuggles up to me for the first time ever! This little dog was so terrified when we first got her that she shrank away from all human contact. It's taken years to win her confidence. But what a lovely little dog she is, full of joy and affection!

Thank you so much for a wonderful update,it seems this little lady has been scared for many reasons, but now she can see she feels more confident so she is happier,I am so pleased that all your patience and kindness has been rewarded, amazing what love will do. Just think if we could not see clearly we would be afraid and worried about everything because we would be uncertain and not sure who or what we could trust, be happy Winnie.
