This year we dropped part of the back seat down and put the crate in the car long ways instead of across the boot. I still had room to sit in the back but was able to keep an eye on the dogs plus they were next to open-able windows so they were much more comfortable. We still used the top box but there seemed to be much more useable packing space with the crate turned in this way. Does anyone else do this?

I think that them being closure to you makes them much more comfortable. I only drive a van but when I first started the rescue I had a tiny Cleo and had to keep the back seat down all the time with a crate across it. The dogs would be so close to me driving I could feel their breath on my neck.
