Please whisper a very gentle hello to Rodney the Westie puppy and Derek the Cavalier x Bichon the two latest members of the Wonky Dog and Cat Club. These two little ones came in today from different breeders. Rodney is 8 weeks old and has no back paws, a tiny stump of a tail and a little piece missing from his ear. It may be this was an accident caused by mum when he was born or he may have been born like this but he seems otherwise fine. At just 8 weeks he is getting around and behaving like any other puppy but we are going yo have to look at what long term options there are for his mobility. Derek is also 8 weeks old and his mum sadly damaged his side when she was picking him up and also caused him to lose most of his tail. His mum Marlene has also come in to rescue so no more puppies for her. Rodney and Derek are now in the care of Kelly who is one of our foster team and also a vet nurse at Maesglas so they will be getting the best care. Just to add that neither of these two are available for adoption yet. Here are a couple of videos of them playing.

Derek has been rehomed but we will update on Rodney's progress via this thread. Rodney came in to our rescue at Friends of the Animals RCT when just 8 weeks old. He has no back paws and we don't know if he was born this way or if his mother had bitten them off during his birth. His legs seem otherwise normal down to his ankles but he needs xrays to know if any other parts are missing apart from his paws. He gets around quite well on his stumps but long term, as he grows, this will become a huge problem for him and he already seems to be feeling some discomfort after a busy day. We have been very fortunate to get an appointment with the very talented Noel Fitzpatrick himself and on August 4th Rodney's foster mum will take him for an assessment and xrays at Fitzpatrick referrals in Goldaming, Surrey. We have been quoted £600 for this and hopefully will know after this if new paws are a possibility. We appreciate that many of our supporters have been helping us with our Wonky Dog Club members but we really must do the very best we can for these animals who need someone on their side. Please donate if you can, even just a couple of pounds will help us help another little animal in desperate need. Update: Rodney has had his assessment and it is, as so often happens, good news bad news. We now know that Rodney experiences pain in his stumps. We found this very upsetting because no one wants to hear that any animal is suffering even more so a baby one. He would have felt that pain from the time he started moving about so has accepted it as part of his life. We have four options. 1 Euthanasia 2 Leave him as he is which of course we now know we cannot do. 3 Have him fitted with external feet covers but as he feels pain he would continue to be in discomfort. 4 Fit him with prosthetic feet. 1, 2 and 3 are not options we could consider so we have chosen to go for the prosthetic feet. Rodney will have new limbs fitted to his hocks once he is 7 months old which is in about 2 months time. There are of course no guarantees but the only other choice would be euthanasia and this is a happy, lively, full of mischief little pup with a huge zest for life. We are going to have to raise an enormous amount of money. £10,000 but saving this life is so worth it. Our team will be meeting to plan what we can do to raise the funds, what events we can hold and how we can reach this huge target in just 2 months. We do have a good start as the assessment was carried out free of charge so we already have £757 in the pot so that's £9,243 to go. Phew! If you are able to help in any way, maybe do a sponsored hop for Rodders, climb a mountain, a bake sale, a car boot sale, a coffee morning or any ideas we would be so grateful. maybe you would like to make a donation via our Fundrazr page on the attached link, by paypal to foawales@aol.com or direct to our bank. We know there will be some people who may say this is too much to spend on one animal but no other animal that is in our care or would come in to the Wonky Dog and Cat Club will lose out by this campaign. Rodney's trotters are going to be blooming expensive but we think he's worth it. If you could like to donate to Rodney's cause, please visit our page here fundrazr.com/campaigns/911SMa
