My thoughts are with Corinna and her family this evening as they lost their beloved Red to Rainbow bridge last night. No words are ever enough at a time like this, but we're all thinking of you.

Thank you all for your kind messages. It came as a shock how rapidly our boy went downhill. It was the kindest thing to do, let him go with dignity and not to suffer. Watching my 22yr old son saying goodbye, crying, was just heartbreaking. There is an empty settee tonight, red used to lay on it with his legs up in the air, bless him. Sleep right red. We love you so much.xxx.

We all had a glass of champagne last night to celebrate Reds life. He lived his life to the full and was a very active dog, chasing squirrels, birds, anything that moved really. Two years ago, my whole family went to Kessingland for Xmas, my mum, sisters, brother and of course us and the hooligans. We had a beach front chalet, it was lovely. On Xmas morning, we all went for a walk along the beach, the whole family. It was a very quiet, safe beach, so we let Red off of his lead. He went for a run, came back then went off again. When he came back, he had something in his mouth. I thought he must have picked up a dead bird but as he got closer I realised he'd caught a wild rabbit!!! A rabbit on a secluded beach!!! I thought the children, my Mills and my young niece and nephew would be mortified (as I was!!) and Xmas day would be ruined but my young nephew, 7 at the time said "well Reds got to have his christmas dinner as well and his didnt cost anything". It made us all laugh so much. I will never forget that Xmas or what happened that morning. It brings a smile to my face everytime I think about it.

He was 12 and was bright, alert and active un until the last few months. He hurt his neck a few months ago, we thought he had probably done it chasing the pigeons in the garden, so took him to the vets and they had a feel and gave him some pain relief. He perked up after that but was never quite himself again. We honestly thought it was old age catching up with him. We brought him new bowls, the ones which are raised off the ground so he wouldnt have to bend to eat or drink. We took him back to the vets for an xray but nothing showed up. We then had a blood test done which showed a high white cell count or something along those lines and his urine had a lot of protein in it.A high cell count can just mean he had an infection so he was given antibiotics. They sent another sample off to eliminate diabetes, liver or kidney problems. All came back clear apart from some some slightly raised results, which are to be expected in an older dog. Last week we went for another appointment at the vets where he said his glands were raised and he could see a lump at the back of reds throat. He spoke to us about it being cancer but we remained positive until this result was confirmed. The only way to take a biopsy of the lump was to put Red under. Red broke his leg when he was 6 months old and didnt do well under anaesthetic - we nearly lost him. We went home and told the vet we would call in the morning with a decision. We did and had arranged for Red to go in this Fri morning. Red didnt make it to his appointment as his decline Sunday was rapid. He had started to lose weight over the last 8wks but I really didnt have any idea of how ill he was. I really did think he was just getting old. Had I known, I would have given him a steak dinner and maybe made the trip to Penrith. We spent my 40th birthday there, me and the hooligans and my two closest friends. We had an old blacksmiths cottage on lots of land. Red loved it there. I wish more than anything that I had taken his symptoms more seriously but he seemed fine, he had just slowed down a bit. Only last Sat he was barking at a swan who was hissing at him so we had to put him back on his lead. It just happened so suddenly and I so wish I had had more time with him or at least made his last few days extra special.

Sadly cancer catches you totally unawares,, I remember losing my George who for the week before the vet and I thought he had hurt his back... I was totally devastated when he had an xray and the vet found secondaries in his lungs. so you have my heartfelt sympathy. Having said that your boy was STUNNING and sounds to me to have been QUITE A CHARACTER so I have no doubt that you will have a multitude of memories that will keep him close to your heart xxxxx
