Guy is a very small JRT x and has come to us from a veterinary hospital in the West Midlands. He was take in there after being found with what they thought was damage due to an RTA. He was with them for three weeks being treated for head trauma and problems with his back legs. Although well in himself and not in any obvious pain he was not getting much better and xrays showed he had some major problems with his back legs and might need to have one amputated. They put out an appeal for a rescue to take him on or he would have to be euthanised. A couple of days later some of our brilliant volunteers transported him down to Wales to our vets hospital. He has been there a little over a week and had xrays and various tests. The thinking is that his problems are likely to be congenital ie birth defects and that he has always be the way he is or perhaps got worse over a period of time. He is a happy little dog who loves toys and eats well but has serious deformities. All the satff at our vets and St Georges have fallen in love with him. We really don't want to give up on this fantastic little character to have agreed that he will be referred to the RCVS Hospital at Langford, Bristol to see a neurologist and an orthopedic specialist. The prognosis is not looking too good at the moment but he ie deserves every chance. His tests will cost up to £2,000 if he needs an MRI scan so we will be running a special fundraiser to help pay for his treatment. The pics are deceiving, this boy is much smaller than he looks.

We have had a little more bad news about Guy today. Yesterday he had a muscle spasm which is something his specialist had warned us was a possibilty. The condition is called myotonia and is similar to muscular dystrophy in humans. This is another progressive illness and it seems this boy has just about everything thrown at him in his short life. Myotonia is painful when a spasm occurs and is may progress quickly or it may take a long time. Of 15 dogs with similar conditions to Guy 1 seemed to make a partial recovery and lived to a good age. The other 14 did not manage so well and their life spans were considerably shorter. But the good news is he has only had one and he may not have another for ages so we will put our optimistic, glass half full, hats on and deal with each day as it comes. His enteritis is much improved and he is back to his amazing, waggy self. He will stay at Langford until at least Tuesday having the best care possible (more expensive than a 4* hotel) and then we will collect him and plan for the rest of his life. His wellbeing and quality of life will always be the deciding factor in every decision that is made about our little guy
