Albi was picked up by a friend of LesleyW in Treforest. He had been seen about the day previous and she managed to get him. He was in the most appalling state, with huge matts of hair and very vet and dirty. She managed to trim off some of the matts and clean him up a bit but he was very stressed and not a happy little man.
Jan held him overnight and then reluctantly he went to the local authority pound for his 7 days. He was very fierce whilst there and was not claimed which is just as well considering the state he was in when found.
he is now in our care and yesterday he went to the vets to be castrated, vaccinated chipped and shaved off. He had been estimated at under a year but the vet thinks he is more likely to be about 8 months as he still had some baby teeth. He has an awful spotty rash like teenage acne all over his tummy and over his back and he also had a very sore willy from constant humping. Now he has been shaved you can see how very thin he is.
He looks a real mess at the moment and will need to go to a groomers for a tidy up once he has had a chance to chill out. He spent the night on the sofa with me and hopefully after a few days of good food and pain relief he will be feeling a lot better.
Jan did get some pics when he arrived which she will post later and I will get some of him now. This little man has had a really tough time and although he wanted to eat everyone does seem to be relaxing a little.

What a lovely boy. Hopefully he is coming to us for foster, after Carys goes to her new home on Thursday (new name Ruby). My heart cries out for him; to be left in such a way & still really a puppy too! I remember when Mimi was that age, she was a bit of a handful (we could not get her fully toilet trained until she was about a year old, she was so full of beans too & came on lots of long walks to channel all her energy ). She still loves her walkies & other doggies; she comes with me at work a lot when my clients give the ok (I am a pet-sitter/dog walker, part-time). Jacqui.

Many Shih Tzu don't come down stairs and to be honest I don't ever force one of mine to do stairs either way as long backed short legged breeds have a tendency to back problems anyway and if he is still a puppy of 8 months the long bone has not set yet. Josh my 7 year old does outside stairs however steep and the stairs in work but will not go up or down any house stairs since he scared himself as a puppy where as Isabella goes both ways faster than I am really happy with! I have had 4 or 5 who would go up but NEVER down which they turned into a great game as my stairs were in the lounge at that time until I invested in stair gates! Also a year old is probably about the average age for toilet training this breed too. Some get it sooner but most don't. I run an advice forum on the breed and this is probably one of the most common questions I get asked and boys are quite often quicker at picking it up than the girlies ( and that probably is because male behaviour has kicked in by about 8 months LOL) My friend said that he (Alby) was quite fierce while he was outside but once they got him in the house he changed and they gave him a bath (though obviously could not even start to tackle the matting) and although he was very wriggly and obviously had not had many baths before he made no attempt to bite or even growl at my two friends. I am quite disappointed that he is not coming to stay with me (as I thought he was) as I have a lot of experience with this breed and two lovely current shih tzu who would have shown him the way but I am glad he is safe and hope he soon finds a lovely forever home. I wasn't quite expecting him to be that colour as I have only seen photos of his back but he is a nice well marked parti-colour with nice nose placement, large round eyes and what seems from the photo to be a really good mouth. These puppies don't come cheap so I cannot for the life of me understand why after going to the expense of buying one it is then not looked after!! He now has a thread on my forum linked to this page

Hello Lesley, I used to go on your forum when Mimi was a puppy, that was in 2008! I got lots of advice & reassurance there. I've just found & read Jasmine's thread; heart-breaking - I'm so sorry . Of course we are very happy to foster Alby - but we don't want to tread on anyones toes .

Hi Jacquie - its fine... its my own fault because I was texting Jan back and to as I was up with my Mum and came back late on Saturday and thought I was going to be fostering him when he came out of the pound. I didn't realise that anyone else had offered - I just assumed from my texting conversation with Jan. I remember Mimi and think you have done wonders with her though I CANNOT believe it was 2008 - where did those years go?? I don't doubt that you will do the same wonderful job with Alby I always feel quite sad this month and question why as we come up to the anniversary of Jasmine's death. I have lost quite a lot of shih tzu over the years and it all hurts but when its a puppy it is so hard to take! I will never forget her and the few amazing weeks I spent with her and the antics she got up to. I just can't believe she was taken - and so suddenly... and I blame myself! I am sure that she is around Isabella often and of course I would not have had Isabella if I had not lost Jasmine so both Josh and I are greatful to her for that.... but I still love Jas and miss her dreadfully. I hope you have fun with Alby and he can know that life can be wonderful for little dogs. You know where I am if you need any advice. I am just sad I didn't get to meet him as I was away when my friends found him xxxxx
